Once you have a general idea of what your website looks like, it’s time to start crawling it. This will give you an idea of what content is on your site, what pages need work, and where the issues are on your site.
- Check for broken links: This is one of the most important things to look for when doing SEO. Broken links can be caused by outdated content or not enough internal links pointing at certain pages. When Google sees that no internal links are pointing at certain parts of your website, they assume that those areas aren’t important and don’t want their users following those paths either.
- Check for duplicate content: Duplicate content happens when someone copies text from another source and then publishes it on their path out of changing anything about it (or just by changing some small details). Google doesn’t like this because it makes them think there’s spam involved, even if nothing else gives them a reason to believe so.
- Check for missing metadata: Metadata refers directly back to how you define keywords while writing out descriptions and titles within each piece of content (for example “Keyword 1” vs “Product Name”). If you go through every single page on your site manually checking this information then great! But if not just make sure everything has some type
The first step is to find out what words people are searching for when they’re looking for your type of content. You can do this with a couple of tools:
- Google AdWords Keyword Planner (example)

- BuzzSumo – discover what content is doing well in social media and how to improve it (example)
However you do it, you need to run through the process above once or twice before getting into the nitty-gritty of setting up an SEO strategy that will work for you.
The first step to doing SEO for your website is figuring out what people are searching for. You can do this by using Google’s keyword planner, which allows you to search for relevant keywords, or by doing an in-depth analysis of Google search console (which gives you information about the keywords people have used on your website and how many times those words have been searched).
- Use Google to find sites that are similar to yours.
- Look for sites that have a high ranking in Google.
- Look for sites that have a high number of backlinks.
Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to your site, and they’re an important SEO factor because they’re one indication of how much authority your site has in the eyes of search engines like Google.
If someone links from their website’s homepage (which is called an “internal link”) or from another article on their website (which is called an “external link”), then this shows Google that your site must be worth linking to because it has useful content or information related to what was being discussed on the linking page/site’s topic.
The next step is to run a content audit of your site’s pages. This will help you identify any issues that may be causing the problems you’re seeing in search (such as broken links, missing alt tags, and excessive ads).
Once that’s out of the way, it’s time to check your site’s speed, mobile usability, and page structure as a whole. This is where tools like PageSpeed Insights can come in handy.
Finally, make sure there aren’t any broken links within your website by using Link Checker by Google or Broken Link Checker by Ahrefs.
Analytics is a tool that shows you how people are finding your site, where they’re coming from, and what keywords they’re using. There are many different analytics tools out there, but one of the more popular ones is Google Analytics.
Google Analytics can provide valuable information about who visits your website and why they visit it. You can use this data to determine which search engines or websites are sending the most traffic to your website and how these visitors find you (i.e., through Google or Bing?). You can also see which keywords people are searching for that lead them directly to one of your pages on the site.
To know how well your SEO is working, you’ll have to figure out what your goal traffic is; that is, how many visitors you want your website to get. The easiest way to do this is by using Google Analytics (for free).
From there, you can track the keywords people searched for to find your site, as well as which pages they clicked on and how long they stayed on your site. You can also see what countries people are visiting and whether the search terms they used were typed or spoken into a voice-activated device like Alexa or Siri.
For example, my website gets about 30 visits per day from organic search results.
Now that we’ve discussed the importance of keywords and how to find them, let’s talk about how to get links from other websites.
Links are what make a website visible to search engines, including Google. They’re also the primary way that search engines decide which websites deserve top rankings on their search results pages (SERPs). In short: links are critical for SEO success.
There are several ways you can get links from other websites: writing guest posts, asking for them directly or indirectly through social media and email marketing campaigns (i.e., creating an email list), commenting on popular blogs in your industry, and leaving thoughtful posts with valuable information in response to questions asked by other bloggers (ideally ones who have large followings), etcetera.
